For our global clients, a simple built-in feature (AfricaIP Guide) is at your disposal on our platform where you can access a snapshot of applicable laws and IP filing requirements for each jurisdiction in Africa. After all, protection, management and enforcement of IP in Africa is not a simplified feat. We got you covered.


This guide is intended for use by global clients who wish to access legal services or register their intellectual property in Africa. The process involves:

  • Accessing information with regards to applicable laws, policies and IP filing requirements for any jurisdiction or the jurisdiction of your choice
  • Finding a lawyer or law firm to assist you with your inquiry and
  • Engaging with a lawyer

Accessing the AfricaIP Guide

2. Click on the ‘Client/Associate’ button.

3. Login to your profile. Click here for guidance on creating a profile on the platform

4. Once logged in, choose ‘AfricaIP Guide’ from the menu at the top.

Navigating the AfricaIP Guide

1. Visit https://africanlaw.africa/africa-ip-guide or choose ‘AfricaIP Guide’ from the menu at the top.

2. Hover on the interactive African map to select a country.

3. Click on the map and choose the country by clicking on the name of the country. When you do this, to confirm your selection, the name of the country is highlighted in orange. For illustrative purposes , let’s choose ‘South Africa’ from the map.

4. You will now be able to view country specific information with regards to Intellectual Property protection in South Africa.

5. Choose the type of Intellectual Property (For example; Trademarks, Patents, Industrial Designs). Your selection will be highlighted in orange. You can click on any part of the orange selection or the dropdown arrow on the right.

6. To access information about IP Offices for the selected country, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the ‘IP Office Website’ button.
